“But it’s not yours. You made them think the baby’s yours.” He glanced away, his expression hiding something.

“Anthony.”

Shaking his head, he said, “Maybe I’m not ready for them to know it’s not.”

“What? Why?”

Again he shrugged. “Because they wouldn’t understand.” He gazed into her eyes, brow tight with stress. “I love you, Kate. I don’t care if other people don’t get it or think it’s too complicated. It’s how I feel and the only person’s opinion I want on the matter is yours.”

Swallowing tightly, she felt the words fighting to come out, but she couldn’t let him take this sort of fall for her. It would cause more problems, because he’d eventually have to tell them the truth.

“Don’t love me, Anthony.”

He took her hands, holding her fingers tight as he whispered, “Too late.”
